The best-known portrait of Marilyn Monroe, her husband Robert Monroe, and their two children, Grace and Josephine, is on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

But what if it was just a photo taken at a party?
And what if she wasn’t smiling?
And what if her body was an illusion?
This is what the Marilyn Monroe Project aims to find out.
In the early 1960s, Marilyn Monroe was in the midst of a personal transformation.
Her hair had been pulled back and her face painted, giving her a new, more youthful appearance.
She had also undergone a facial transplant, which allowed her to grow her own eyebrows and nose.
But for the most part, her physical appearance remained the same.
Her husband, Robert Monroe was more than a star.
He was a father, husband, and grandfather.
His success with his business was widely recognised and he was also one of the most famous people of the day.
In fact, he was the biggest star in the world.
He could sell the biggest movies, win the Oscars, and have his image used in newspapers and magazines.
But he also suffered from mental health issues.
In 1964, Robert suffered a severe depression and was treated for it for many years.
He also lost his sense of smell, which he blamed on drugs and alcohol.
In 1967, he committed suicide by hanging himself in his Manhattan apartment.
When Marilyn was growing up, she would have felt as though she was living in a different world.
She was a young woman who had to work hard to find her place in the community.
But her mother believed that her daughter should live her life authentically.
Marilyn’s mother would tell her that if her daughter had a problem with her body, she could deal with it on her own.
So, Marilyn was a model for her mother, as well as for her father.
“She was an icon in the eyes of many,” says her mother.
But when her daughter died, her mother took her in.

Marilyn would attend her mother’s concerts, go on shopping sprees with her mother and sister, and help her mother with her homework.
“She taught me to accept myself,” Marilyn says.
“I was never angry.
I never hurt anyone.
I didn’t do drugs.
I always put the needs of others before my own.
It was just an amazing journey.”

Her mother’s encouragement and support were a crucial part of Marilyn’s life.
“My mother was the most amazing person in the whole world, she was a mother, a grandmother, a wife, and she taught me what love was,” Marilyn said.
Marilyns father, Frank, was the first of Marilyn to have children.
Marilyn, who had been pregnant with her second child at the time, became pregnant again and was given an ultimatum.
Either she give birth to her son, Robert, or else she had to leave him.
“It was a very difficult decision for me to leave my son,” she says.
She gave birth to their son, John, on April 30, 1964.
The first thing she did after giving birth was go to the hospital and give birth.
The next day, she met her first son, Michael, who was born the next day.

After the marriage, Marilyn took her children to see the birth of her second son, Jack, at a New York hospital.
“When she came to visit, she did it for him and she felt a strong connection to him,” Marilyn’s sister, Grace, said.
“They had been together for a long time.
He loved her and she loved him.”
After Jack died in 1973, Marilyn, now aged 86, moved to Los Angeles and started a new life with her family.
She had a beautiful daughter, Grace.
“I never thought I would have grandchildren,” Marilyn told the Associated Press in 2004.
“My grandchildren are still with me, they are still living in my house and they are looking after my mother and me,” she said.
