A “happy birthday” boss who said “Happy Birthday” to Donald Trumps birthday is being fired, sources told Politico.
Marc J. Kasowitz, the head of the law firm representing Trump’s legal team, was hired as Trump’s lawyer in January and took over from attorney Jay Sekulow, who left the firm after Trump’s inauguration.
The news came as Trump was reportedly weighing firing Kasowitz and Sekulows departure from his law firm after a string of embarrassing events in which he and the president clashed publicly.
The news comes amid a widening crisis in the White House over how to handle the president’s increasingly erratic behavior.
Trump’s firing of Kasowitz has triggered an internal battle within the Trump legal team over the presidents handling of the Russia investigation, a rift that has seen him accused of lying about his ties to Russia and of obstructing justice in a criminal probe.
In a statement to Politico, Kasowitz said he was fired because he “was not fit to be a part of the team.”
“I am grateful to my colleagues at Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP for their unwavering support throughout my tenure,” he said.
“I wish them the very best.”
Kasowitz was not immediately available for comment.
Trump and his lawyers have insisted they are in the clear over Russia’s alleged involvement in the 2016 election and that the president is cooperating with an investigation into his ties with Russia.
Kasowsky has denied any wrongdoing.
The firing comes after a tumultuous first month at the Whitehouse.
The president said he would resign if Kasowitz failed to help him and called on the Senate Intelligence Committee to investigate him, as well as the House Intelligence Committee, which has led the Russia probe.
Kassem’s departure is a setback for Trump, who had been eager to bring on a top lawyer to help his administration as he seeks to regain the public’s trust.
The White House has long argued that Kasowitz’s role should not be considered a part-time job because of the political pressures he faces.
