NASA astronaut Mark Kelly’s birthday cake is being re-released, with a new recipe inspired by the space agency’s own cake recipe.
The recipe calls for making two layers of flour, 1/2 cup of cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of butter and 2 tablespoons of icing sugar.
Kelly had his cake made by NASA’s former cake master, Michael Lippmann, and it has been re-re-released for this year’s birthday celebration.
Kelly’s cake, the third-most decorated in NASA history, was designed by Michael Lipsmann, a retired NASA cake master.
The cake is topped with a “Happy Birthday to You” banner and decorated with a red, white and blue circle that is inspired by Kelly’s personal motto.
Kelly has been a frequent contributor to NASA, and Lipsman’s cake inspired Kelly’s signature line, “It’s time for me to say goodbye to this world.”NASA celebrated Kelly’s 40th birthday last week with a toast at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The event drew nearly 3,000 guests.NASA and Kelly’s cake are available at NASA’s official online store, NASA Cake, as well as at other NASA gift shops.
NASA has also released two special-edition NASA-themed calendars.NASA cake recipes can be found at the NASA Cake website, as are NASA’s own “DuckTales” video and “Dinner with a NASA Employee” book.
